This view of the Sun's corona was taken during a total solar eclipse. Joe Cali captured the image from the Great Sand Sea in East Central Libya on March 29th, 2006. Straight single exposures of solar eclipses do not adequately represent the view as seen by the human eye. Film / digital has about five stops latitude while the eye has about fourteen. the inner corona is about 14 stops brighter than the outer corona and the Lunar surface. Fourteen different exposures ranging from 1/1000 sec to 8 seconds in one-stop increments were taken through an ED 600mm f7.5 refracting telescope on Fuji Superior100 film. The correctly exposed parts of each of the fourteen images were composited in radial elements into a single image that simulates what a person looking through a pair of 7x50 binoculars might see. The inner segments were circular while the outer segments were asymmetric following the contours of light intensity so as to make the transitions invisible to the viewer giving the imapression of a single image. |
