We have had another busy year of competition this year.
In A grade monochrome, there were only four regular competitors and four occasional competitors, with entries received during the year from six others.
In A grade colour prints, there were five regular competitors, four occasional competitors and four others who entered at some point during the year.
The competition was stronger in A grade slides, but again there were only four regular competitors, eight occasional competitors, and three others who entered at some point. Placings in A grade slides were hotly contested, with the points lead changing hands several times over the last few competitions.
B grade competitors gave much more attention to prints than to slides. In prints there were three regular competitors, three occasional competitors and seven others who entered at some time during the year. Again, this was a hotly contested section, with the points lead swapping between the top print workers.
B grade slides did not really have any regular competitors right throughout the year, but there were four slide workers who were semi-regular competitors, becoming more regular as the year wore on. There were six others who entered the competition at some point.
In addition to regular competition nights, we had the two portfolio competitions during the year. In May, the Hedda Morrison Trophy for print portfolio was won by Bronwyn Potts Hendy, with Marion Milliken and Jan Kulikowski highly commended. In July, the Fletchers Fotographics Trophy was won by newcomer Guillaume Simioni, with Brian Jones and David Bassett highly commended.
In addition, the club competed against Murray Bridge International Photographic Club in a two-way interclub slide competition of 20 slides per club, which this year was judged by Mike Key with CPS as hosts. In a close competition, Murray Bridge again beat CPS, although CPS members contributed four of the six highest scoring slides. In order to avoid clashing with other competitions, the Murray Bridge club has agreed to our suggestion that we bring forward this competition to March. Slides for the interclub will therefore be collected at the March competition night and sent off to Murray Bridge, which will host the judging for 2005. They will return the full set with judging points and comments to us for screening in April 2005.
The other competition of the year in which CPS members had the opportunity to try out against other clubs was the annual Allied Camera Clubs Interstate Competition, held as part of the Australian Photographic Society Convention in Adelaide in August. Unfortunately, CPS members failed to support this competition adequately, and we were obliged to send off virtually everything club members gave us, with no selections made. As a result, there is no question that we did not stage the best entry we could have, and our results at the bottom of the state table in all sections monochrome prints, colour prints and slides were probably not surprising. As a result of this lack of support, the competition sub-committee has decided on bringing forward the deadline for this competition by several weeks, and the deadline will be well-publicised as being the competition night in July. If this fails to gain the support of members, we may have to consider withdrawing from the competition.
Our judges for the year were again drawn primarily from the ranks of the Australian Institute of Professional Photographers, and we should be grateful for their continued support. Our judges were: David Paterson, David McClenaghan, Marc Fenning, Bob Cooper, Chris Holly, Geoff Comfort, Steve Keough and Bob Miller from the AIPP, and Liz Hawkes (from Capital Magazine), journalist Garry Raffaele, CIT lecturer Allan Moore and ANU School of Arts lecturer Peter Fitzpatrick. Our print and slide of the year judges will be Hilary Wardhaugh and Steve Nebauer.
Considerable changes are proposed in the way competitions are run over the coming 12 months and as I do not feel I am the person to drive these changes, I am not planning to re-nominate as competition director. I would like to say a huge thankyou to Jim Mason, who has been a rock of support to me over the two years in which I have been competition director. He is a tireless worker for this club and a good friend, and it is always a pleasure to work with him. I would also like to thank the other member of the competition sub-committee, Bill Hall, and the handful of people who regularly form the backbone of the workforce required to stage each competition night I would say who you are, but would not want to miss anyone out, so please accept my thanks anyway.
