click here. Each month, the first meeting is devoted to a competition between members. The aim of these friendly yet competitive contests is to improve skills. Professional photographers or artists judge the entries and provide constructive feedback. Members may enter in any of three sections - slides, colour prints or monochrome prints. There are advanced and beginner grades and the prints or slides can have digital or conventional origins. To make life easier for the beginners we combine colour and monochrome into a prints section.
You can enter some prints on any subject matter in the "OPEN" section and some in the "SET TOPICS" listed below for each month of the year. the trick is to get the list when it is published each December and keep it with your camera to grab opportunities as they come up. It's a great way to train your eye.
Merits and distinctions are awarded each month which carry points. Points are accumulated throughout the year on a ladder and trophies are awarded to the top three point holders in each division at years end.
We also conduct three stand alone competitions : The Digital City Trophy for a portfolio of 5-8 projected images - slides or digital, The Ted's / Hedda Morrison Award for a portfolio of 5-8 colour or mono prints and an end of year print and projected image of the year competition for the best individual images of the year. The portfolio competitions carry $100 first prizes.
The rules may look a bit daunting at first glance. While they do need to be precise, they are actually pretty simple. If you join and want to enter, just ask the competition director for clarification or assistance.
