Interested in Photography? ........ So are we!

The Canberra Photographic Society (CPS) is the largest camera club in the ACT. We have approximately 60 members representing all age groups and walks of life. Our meetings are relaxed and friendly, a great place to socialize, share experiences and learn. Meetings are normally held in the Griffin Centre, Genge St, Civic, Canberra 2601 and typically last around 2 hours.[see location maps below],

Each month we have a competition, an activity night and an excursion.

The first Tuesday of each month is our Competition night. The meeting commences at 7:45pm and most months there are two competitions A Grade and B Grade with categories for colour prints, monochrome prints and digital projected images. The competitions are held in room 1.06 of the Griffin Centre.

Activity nights are normally held in room 1.07 of the Griffin Centre on the second Tuesday of each month.

These meetings are quite varied and include workshops, demonstrations and presentation. Examples of past activity nights include:

The CPS organizes excursions most months. These range in duration from a couple of hours to several days. Recent examples of shorter excursions include a twilight photo shoot at the National museum and a daylight photo shoot along Anzac Pde and the War Memorial. Longer excursions further afield have included a weekend in the snow and a trip to Lake Mungo.

You don't need to own any special type of camera equipment to be a member or to make good photographs. No matter what your camera there are always different things to try so come along, join in, push your boundaries and expand your horizons. Its amazing what you can do with a disposable film camera or a simple digital point and shoot and even more amazing what you can do with some of the new high end digital equipment.

You may come along as a visitor for as long as you wish. You can participate in some activities as a visitor. This costs nothing and you can see some activities first hand. As a visitor, you cannot enter competitions, exhibitions or come on excursions. This is due to restrictions on our insurance policy and because we want you to have some incentive to join.
Our financial year is the calendar year. If you do decide to join in the second half of the year, we charge a pro rata rate of the annual fee to take you up to the next date when full fees are due.

Other fees
Exhibitions: up to three per year. Participation optional but encouraged by members of all levels. Participation fee [$10-$20 per print] to cover gallery rent, catering for the opening and production of catalogues and publicity.

Excursions : Pay costs relating to your food, transport & accommodation (if applicable). No society charge applies to excursion participation.

Occasionally some meeting activities that might involve materials or extra costs incur a small participation fee. These are always kept to a minimum and are cost recovery basis only.
The CPS is a non-profit organization. Though these fees may seem higher than some clubs in the ACT, full participation represents very good value for money and are only a fraction of what most members spend on equipment and printing etc. Another way of looking at it would be to compare the annual fees with the cost of a half day photography course. If you do decide to join, you will be most welcome.
